History of Elderberries
Elderberries are tiny, dark berries that grow in clusters on the flowering elder tree. Indigenous to Europe and also North America, elderberries have been utilized for centuries in natural, therapeutic treatment options because of their immune boosting, anti-infectious properties. In 400BC the ancient healer, Hippocrates, referred to the black elderberry shrub as his “medicine chest”. References to this healing berry can be traced back to the Egyptians who would have a tincture buried with them, and the Greek Army who utilized their medicinal applications during battles. Today, elderberries have proven to be beneficial in some HIV/AIDS, viral encephalitis, and meningitis trials.
Physiology
Elderberries consist of natural substances called flavonoids, such as quercetin and anthocyanins. These increase cytokine production and have antioxidant properties known to reduce free radicals within the cells, preventing cellular damage and promoting beneficial anti-cancer and anti-aging processes. Cytokines are a small protein released by the cells. These “messenger proteins” support the interaction between individual cells and play an integral role in preventing viruses from crossing the cell membrane. Elderberries also contain a substance called antivirin, which further inhibits the replication of viruses. Elderberries have been clinically proven to be effective on over 10 flu strains, including swine and avian flu.
